Established in 2002 by Paypal and Tesla founder Elon Musk, SpaceX aims to improve the cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency of space travel, and ultimately facilitate the colonisation of Mars. Late last year, the company launched its first successful commercial payload into space via its Falcon 9 launch vehicle (named after the Millennium Falcon spaceship in Star Wars). The occasion marks the first in a string of commercial contracts scheduled for launch in the next few years. Musk himself hopes to be one of the first inhabitants of Mars and even plans to die there.
